Chapter 9: Pentatonic Core of the Modes
The modes built on F♯ and E♭. The foundation of each one is the black-key pentatonic you already know. Use that core first, then add the notes that give the mode its color: 7 for Ionian, 6 for Dorian, 2 for Phrygian, 4 for Lydian, 7 for Mixolydian, 6 for Aeolian, 2 & 5 for Locrian.
Six modes, two pentatonic cores. F♯ Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian all sit on F♯ major pentatonic. E♭ Dorian, Aeolian and Phrygian all sit on E♭ minor pentatonic. Find the core first, then let the two remaining notes tell you which mode you're in.
