That’s how Play What You Feel opens. Left hand holds one note. Right hand plays the black keys. Every single note you play sounds good. And somewhere within the first minute, without being told what any of it is called, you’re improvising.
 
The book stays in that key the whole way through—sounds first, names later, and only when needed. You’ll be playing your own creation using a musical mood before you learn its name. You’ll play the blues before anyone mentions counting or treble clefs. This isn’t just a trick to make theory palatable. It’s the argument that the ear can get there first, and the vocabulary can be just a way to label what you already know intuitively.
 
Phase 1 puts fourteen distinct musical moods under your hands using the simplest possible patterns; either all the black keys or all the white keys. Bright, sad, dreamy, unsettled, floating, angry, bluesy. Same two patterns. Fourteen different feelings. The only thing that changes is which note you’re holding down.
 
Phase 2 opens the palette wider—moving what you've learned to any key, pentatonic shapes, bass lines, the connection between scales and chords, blues, and world scales. All of it arriving after you’ve already felt it for yourself in Phase 1.
 
Three side quests sit off the main path. One turns improvising into meditation. One explores the strangest, most colorful sounds in the book. One is about becoming fluent in the language of the blues. Take them, skip them, come back later. Nothing here is a prerequisite for anything else.
 
Every chapter comes with backing tracks and drones on its own companion page, free, reachable by scanning a code from the page you’re on. You can improvise along with a whole world of different musical styles and beats—or simply create your own accompaniment.
